Have you heard of the 5 A.M. Club? It’s one of those books that is having a moment in the spotlight as people are reading it, starting to wake up at 5 A.M., and change their lives.

I tried to read it. I really did.
But I just couldn’t make it past the first couple of chapters.
What it made me think of was all of the other productivity and time management trends that have come onto the scene. Things like…. ✖️Using the pomodoro technique
✖️Batch scheduling
✖️Only choosing three things to work on per day
✖️Following morning routines of successful CEO’s
✖️Using the 4-Hour Work Week

All of those things work for different people. But have you ever noticed that all of them require you to fit yourself into somebody else’s system? 🤔

I know that I’ve tried many things on that list, and I’m sure you have too. There’s a cycle that goes something like this: 🖤I get REALLY PUMPED about the new system 🖤I follow it faithfully for a very short amount of time (usually 1-3 days)
🖤Then LIFE HAPPENS but I still try to follow the new system
🖤Eventually I abandon the system and go back to not having a real system at all
🖤I start to get stressed and overwhelmed, and wonder why I can’t be as productive as I want to
🖤I find a new system that promises to solve my productivity and time management woes
🖤I get REALLY PUMPED about the new system
🖤I think you get the picture 😉

A few weeks ago I was on a call with @shaunavanbogart and she said something that really struck me: “You traveled nonstop so you could get comfortable being uncomfortable.” I didn’t realize how true that was until she reflected it back to me.

Last year I traveled for four months straight, and it was one of the most amazing, terrifying, and insightful periods of growth I’ve ever experienced. I built a toolbox of internal and external ways to support myself that I wouldn’t have if not for that experience.

But now, six months later, I can feel myself unconsciously returning to old patterns that don’t serve me or who I am in the process of becoming. Instead of getting stuck in the “why me” drama cycle, I’m employing similar tactics I learned while I was traveling: ✨ Change your environment often - new physical spaces unlock new possibilities and can move stagnant energy in our minds and bodies ✨ Treat everything like an adventure - instead of getting frustrated when things don’t go to plan, be open and grateful for the new path you’re being guided towards ✨ Stay present - when we are IN the present moment, our minds can’t take us into an anxiety-induced future trip and we can fully enjoy everything that we have brought into our reality in this moment

It can be tempting to try to numb out the discomfort, but it won’t serve you. Treat the discomfort like a friend - listen to it, see what it wants and what it’s here to teach you, and love it. Being uncomfortable is always a sign of evolution.

Raise your hand if you struggle with letting go of things that are no longer serving you 🙋🏻‍♀️ I’m in the midst of realizing that something I’ve been holding onto for the past few weeks is NOT serving me, but actually letting go of it feels really hard. Because I have all of the potentials of what could happen IF things work out.

But what I’ve realized through this process is that we can’t make other people show up in our lives the way that we want them to. And it can hurt to let something that made you so happy leave, but I’m not available for half-assery.

I’m not good at the in-betweens, and letting myself hang out here because it makes someone else comfortable is only a disservice to myself and the life I want to live.
